Miracle Mud

Terrible Name - Brilliant Product

As filtration we are using an Ecosystem 4822 Pro Sump

They come with 3 lights, 2 7 inch sock holders (and Socks) and 60 pounds of Miracle Mud

They are made from hand glued acrylic in the USA by Leng Sy.

First Picture shows a Miracle Mud 10 pound Jar, Second the Bed of Mud between 1 to 1.5 inches thick and the last picture shows a plastic bag laid over mud bed where the water enters this section of the sump (you put a plastic bag down so it does not stir up the mud - remember this step)

Miracle mud acts like a DSB (deep sand bed) without the potential issues of them. It also slowly releases minerals back into the aquarium.

The Ecosystem Method works through personal experience. We have used it on 5 tanks now.

Aqua Blue Sample

I am not a fan of live rock(if you didn’t guess).  If you do use live rock you get hitch hiking pests (like blinking bristle worms) and basically have to wait for the “live” rock to die before you can add anything to the aquarium. The whole tank maturation thing.

  • Carib sea do a range of rock we import from the states.

  • 100% free and great value if you compare it to “live” Rock.

All this rock is from my home tank that we had to pull down due to a snail eating/boring a hole into a silicon join and creating a leak! $1000 later and the tank was fixed. Only problem was we had to empty the tank and send it over to Gary at Arana Hills.

  1. I use live sand called Aragalive also from Carib Sea.

  2. The permits on this were a PITA to get, AQIS are very strict on importing “live” and bacteria products. After a lot of effort though, we import without the sand being irradiated on entry into Australia, so it’s the genuine US live products.

New tank

The other beauty of Aragalive is you don’t need to wash it (Praise Be!). Washing Ooilte sugar sized sand would be the pits and you’d loose half the sand down the sink! When using the Live Sands you simply pour in the sand, empty the satchel of Bio Magnetic Clarifer from in

The Next Day…

So we added a lot of fish, coral and live Carib Sea rock to the tank yesterday.

So first thing was to have a good look around, make sure all the corals are ok, (no floating fish _PHEW!)

and do some tests…

We import Tropic Marin test kits from Germany. Very accurate and simple to use.

ZERO - Love the Ecosystem Method. It just works

So time for fish breakfast

Here is a short video for you….

All for now from the all the team at Aqua Blue

The Big Move 13/7/2011

What a day.

The tank had been filled and maturating for almost 4 days and we decided to move everything from the old 4 x 2.5 x 2.5 foot office aquarium to our new tank.

Armed with Buckets, Garbage bags and some reachin’ tongs Pete set forth.

4 hours later…

More fish in another bucket

The last picture is the “mature” Carib sea rock from the old tank. Look at the life on it and covered in Coraline Algae.

The Middle Picture shows some Tangs (Big blue was playing dead and Robbie was freakin’ out), 2 of my 3 purple tanks just kept swimmin’

So the first job was to place all the coral from the old tank, empty some water out of the tank as the levels kept rising and flooding the sump (see under)

Then position more coral where they won’t sting or eat each other. Take another look from the top , from the side. Set Linky (the blue starfish) free. The finally hey presto….

After carefully adding tank water into the fish buckets over a quite longer period it was time for our tangs to go free range!!!

Pete is excellent at doing this (you can’t buy experience).

Did I mention yet we decided to go to Nielsen’s Marine Mates to get some more?  The first picture below is our new Racing Sohal Tang (thanks Ben)

What a day, time for all good fish to go to bed!!!.

EcoTech Marine Pumps Deliver More Flow than Promised

New study proves that flow from the VorTech family of pumps exceeds even the company’s own advertised claims

EcoTech Marine, the company that revolutionized the reef aquarium propeller pump, is pleased to announce the results of a scientific study on flow rates published today in this month’s edition of Advanced Aquarist magazine.

Dr. Sanjay Joshi, Ph.D., professor of Industrial Engineering and Manufacturing at the Pennsylvania State University, conducted the study. He used a proven method to accurately determine the output flow of several leading aquarium propeller pumps. The study scientifically shows the entire VorTech line delivers superior flow rates far in excess of what EcoTech Marine itself was claiming in its own marketing and advertising.

The MP40, the VorTech that started it all, delivers 18.2% more than its advertised claim of 3200 GPH—netting 3781 GPH in the study.

The MP10, ideally situated for tanks smaller than 50 gallons, has an advertised flow rate of 1575 gallons per hour (GPH). The study showed a GPH of 2460—a 56.2% increase over the advertised amount.

The MP60, perfectly matched for the largest aquariums, has an advertised rate of 7500 GPH. It delivered 8509 GPH in the controlled study—an increase of 13.5% and unmatched by any other similarly sized pump in the industry

“At EcoTech Marine, we pride ourselves on delivering technologically superior products with exceptional value,” says Tim Marks, president of EcoTech Marine. “Using the most accurate equipment and technology possible to measure water flow, Dr. Joshi looked at a wide range of pumps from a variety of manufacturers. The fact the VorTech delivered superior results is a testament to our unrelenting commitment to engineering and manufacturing the most advanced products in the industry.”

In an effort to standardize the flow measurements and claims for aquarium propeller pump manufacturers, EcoTech enlisted the help of Dr. Sanjay Joshi to design an independent study utilizing the latest in analytical techniques available. To perform the study, Dr. Joshi used a Sontek 10-MHz Acoustic Doppler Velocimeter in a 350-gallon aquarium. The velocity profile of the pump exit flow was measured at a distance of one diameter downstream from the output of the pumps, and these measurements were used to determine the volume flow rate output.

“We’re very pleased with the results of the study,” said Marks. “The loyalty of EcoTech Marine customers has been rewarded. Reef aquarists purchase a pump for an expected performance, the most important of which is flow rate. We’d rather under-promise and over-deliver any day of the week to earn our customer’s loyalty.”
